Assignment #1: Five Inspirational Images

This was a photo I saw on BBC news one day. The composition is astonishing to me. I find it hard to produce from thin air, a composition with such wonderful element of chaos to it.

Mad Men is one of my favorite TV shows. Aside from the lighting, the striking pose and the subtle facial expression, what I admire the most about this poster is how brilliantly it represents the show on a conceptual level.

I scanned this photo off of a photo album at the SFU library. What captured me was the complex, involved and emotional story it told through one image.

This is a photo I took off of the walls of the many abandoned buildings on East Hastings. The poster, Money Baby is wonderfully drawn and composed, but in of itself, is nothing special. The context and location is what gave it's power. The simple text, You Are Beautiful adds further depth to the image. Especially if it is a response by a stranger.

This is page 1 of a 12 page short story by Jamie Hernandez called, Flies On The Ceiling. This short comic is one of my favorite comics of all time. It is also one of the most influential comics in my own comic work, in terms of pacing, subject matter, style but most importantly, storytelling. I aspire to deliver such a character with such a complex history and emotions within one silent page.
